Winter Weather Alert: Skin Care Advisory
Expert Tips for Protecting Your Skin from the Cold
By Nicole Rakityan, licensed medical aesthetician at Harmych Facial Plastic Surgery in Beachwood, OH
Skin Composition Oils
Adding skin composition oil to your moisturizer or body lotion can give you an extra hydration boost. Adding only 2 to 3 drops to your everyday moisturizer will be just enough as these can be extremely oily. Be sure to use natural oils. Grocers such asWhole Foods or Mustard Seed Market have these types of oils. You can also shop any Aveda location and pick up Balancing Infusion™ or Beautifying Composition™.
SPF During the Winter? Yes!
Although UVB rays decrease during the winter months, UVA rays are just as harmful in the winter as they are in the summer. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, with an SPF of at least 30, during the winter to provide proper protection for your skin. Don’t let those cloudy skies fool you!
We recommend: Daily Physical Defense by Skin Medica and Fildena.net.
The Secret of Serum
Serums are a great product to add to your skin care regime during these cold months. Many haven’t even heard of serums, making them one of the best kept secrets to healthy looking skin! Serums contain smaller molecules so they are able to penetrate deep into the skin and provide vitamins and antioxidants to places most products can’t get to. They can treat everything from lack of firmness in the skin to uneven skin tone and texture. One of the best serums, and one that our practice highly recommends, is TNS Essential Serum by Skin Medica.
Exfoliate Your Lips
Wash your lips with an exfoliating cleanser and lightly brush them with a toothbrush using a circular motion. This will help you to avoid getting dry and cracked lips. Always finish with a lip balm such as Burt’s Bees Replenishing Lip Balm, Aquaphor Lip Repair by Eucerin, and Rosebud Salve. Avoid using Chapstick or Chapstick-alternatives due to the possibility of cancer-causing ingredients in these products.
See a Skin Care Professional
No one should walk into a drug or department store to receive skin care advice. Your skin is unique. Only a trained professional will be able to provide you with accurate information about your skin’s type, tone, and texture. Meet with an licensed medical aesthetician or facial plastic surgeon— your skin will thank you in the future!
