Who is a Candidate for Rhinoplasty or Nose Job Surgery in Cleveland, OH?
Patients often consider rhinoplasty to correct:
- Nasal asymmetry or a “crooked nose”
- Dorsal hump or high nasal bridge
- Nose that is too large, too wide or a nose that does not match a person’s facial proportions
- Nasal breathing problems
Nasal deformities, whether they cause breathing problems or cosmetic issues, may interfere with a person’s quality of life. Healthy men and women, with appropriate expectations, seeking improvement in the appearance and/or function of their nose, may be excellent candidates for rhinoplasty. Younger patients may be appropriate candidates based on several factors, including physical and emotional maturity. Dr. Brian Harmych is an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon and can assist you in determining whether the nose has matured enough to undergo rhinoplasty.
How is Rhinoplasty or Nose Job Surgery Performed?
Rhinoplasty surgery may be performed with moderate sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s preference. Small incisions, hidden under the nasal tip and within the nose, allow access to the cartilage and bone responsible for the shape and function of the nose. Many rhinoplasty procedures can be performed without the use of external incisions. The nose cartilage and bones are carefully adjusted to achieve the desired appearance and function. As each nose is unique in both appearance and function, the rhinoplasty procedure is tailored to each patient’s individual aesthetic and functional needs. Sutures are used to close the incisions and a small splint is placed over the bridge of the nose. Nose packing is usually not required.
How Long is Recovery from Rhinoplasty or Nose Job Surgery?
The procedure is done on an outpatient basis with most patients returning to the comfort of their own home a few hours after surgery. Patients are encouraged to be up and about on the day of surgery. Prescription pain medicine is usually required for about 3 days. Bruising and swelling last about 7 to 10 days. Activity is restricted for 2 weeks with additional avoidance of contact sports for one month. A splint over the bridge of the nose and a few small sutures near the nostril opening are removed one week after surgery and most patients are able to return to their occupational and social activities at that time.
What should I expect during my Rhinoplasty Consultation?
Dr. Harmych and his staff understand that it is normal for patients to feel nervous about their initial consultation for rhinoplasty. Knowing what to expect can make you feel more comfortable. The most important part of the rhinoplasty consultation is getting a chance to meet Dr. Harmych. Rhinoplasty is the most complex and technically demanding procedure performed by plastic surgeons and facial plastic surgeons. Therefore, the rhinoplasty consultation generally takes a little longer than consultations for other facial plastic surgery procedures. You should expect to spend as much time as you need with Dr. Harmych to be sure all of your questions and concerns are discussed. It can be helpful to write down your questions prior to meeting Dr. Harmych. Generally, patients spend about 45 minutes with Dr. Harmych in consultation for rhinoplasty. You should expect a detailed review of your medical history as well as a thorough physical examination, including examination of the external and internal nose, as well as full facial analysis. Dr. Harmych also offers simulated pre- and postoperative rhinoplasty imaging to help you understand the results that may be possible. Patients will also have the opportunity to review Dr. Harmych’s before and after rhinoplasty photo albums. While some of Dr. Harmych’s rhinoplasty before and after photos are available on our website, you will have the opportunity to review additional before and after rhinoplasty photos in the office during your rhinoplasty consultation.
