Indications for rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a procedure that either changes he shape  or improves the function of the nose. Some issues that may require rhinoplasty or nose job to correct include:

  • Nasal asymmetry or a “crooked nose”
  • Dorsal hump
  • Nose that is too large, too wide or a nose that does not match a person’s facial proportions
  • Nasal breathing problems

Dr. Harmych’s philosphy on rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty should be tailored to the individual patient to address their unique anatomy and desired outcome. Expected results from a nose job will vary.  Dr. Harmych’s philosophy on rhinoplasty is conservative. The goal of the procedure is to maintain the appearance of your nose by tailoring the proportions of the nose in a subtle way so that the nose still looks like your nose. Meaning, that your nose still looks natural even after rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty

Types of Rhinoplasty

These two types of rhinoplasty are open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. In an open rhinoplasty, a small incision is hidden between the nostrils. In a closed rhinoplasty, the incision is made inside the nose.

Ask a doctor which type of nose job is right for you.

Main Types of Rhinoplasty

  • Rhinoplsty (cosmetic nasal procedure)
  • Septoplasty (functional nasal procedure)
  • Turbinate reduction (functional nasal procedure)
  • Septorhinoplasty (functional and cosmetic procedure)

Let’s go over each type of nose surgery in a bit more detail.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is procedure designed to reshape the nose.

Septoplasty

You may have heard the term “deviated septum”.  The septum, located in the midline of the nose, is  cartilage that divides the nose into two sides.  If the septum is displaced to either side, airflow may be decreased. This is a common problem. Septoplasty is a procedure that corrects the deviation and restores the septum to the center, or midline, relieving the airflow blockage.

Turbinate Reduction

Turbinates are small torpedo-like structures inside the nose that moisten, heat and filter air as it enters the nose. If enlarged or swollen due to allergy or sinus issues, the turbinates can obstruct airflow in the nose. The turbinates are commonly reduced in size during rhinoplasty or septoplasty surgery to further improve air movement through the nose. This procedure is commonly performed at the same time as rhinoplasty.

Septorhinoplasty

Similar to septoplasty, septorhinoplasty corrects the septum and external nose shape and structure. Septorhinoplasty usually involves making changes to the inside of the nose and the outside of the nose to improve the nasal breathing, and sometimes the appearance. Technically, in septorhinoplasty, both septoplasty and rhinoplasty are performed.

Who is a candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Healthy people, with realistic expectations, who want to improve the appearance of their nose, may be candidates for rhinoplasty. Younger patients may be appropriate candidates based on several factors, including physical and emotional maturity.

Dr. Harmych is an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon and can assist you or your adolescent in determining whether the nose has matured enough to have a rhinoplasty.

How is Rhinoplasty or Nose Job Surgery Performed?

  • Rhinoplasty is done with general anesthesia.
  • Small incisions, hidden under the nasal tip and within the nose are used.
  • Many rhinoplasty procedures can be performed without external incisions.
  • The nose cartilage and bones are tailored. Each rhinoplasty is tailored to the aesthetic and functional goals.
  • Sutures are used to close the incisions and a small splint is placed over the bridge of the nose.
  • Nose packing is not used.

How Long is Recovery from Rhinoplasty or Nose Job Surgery?

  • The procedure is done on an outpatient basis.
  • Prescription pain medicine is sometimes used for 1 or 2 days.
  • Bruising and swelling last about a week.
  • Activity is restricted for 2 weeks.
  • A splint over the bridge of the nose and  any sutures are removed one week after rhinoplasty.
  • Most of the swelling is gone within 1-2 months.
  • Although, full recovery from rhinoplasty takes 1-2 years.
