What is facial plastic surgery?

Facial plastic surgery is cosmetic and reconstructive surgery exclusive to the face, head, and neck regions only.

What is a facial plastic surgeon?

Any physician can call themselves a “facial plastic surgeon.” However, there are only three certifying boards for physician’s practicing comprehensive facial plastic surgery: The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, The American Board of Plastic Surgery and The American Board of Otolaryngology (ABOto).

How is “facial plastic surgery” different from “plastic surgery”?

While surgeons in both fields are qualified to perform face and neck operations, facial plastic surgeons are trained to operate exclusively on the face and neck.  In contrast, general plastic surgeons focus on the breast, abdomen and extremities, with less time spent training in face and neck procedures.

What is eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty?

Surgery of the eyelids where fat and excess skin, bags, pouches, wrinkles in the eye area are removed.

What is “BOTOX” and how long does it last?

BOTOX® is the trade name for Botulinum Toxin. There are several other types of Botulinum Toxins, including Dysport® and Xeomin®.  It is injected to temporarily relax facial muscles to eliminate the appearance of wrinkles for three to six months.

What is cheek / chin augmentation?

Surgery where implants are placed in the cheeks or chin to improve bone structure and support sagging, soft tissues.

What are chemical peels?

Resurfacing of the skin with an acid solution that peels the top layers and allows smoother, regenerated skin to emerge; an effective treatment for wrinkles caused by sun damage, mild scarring, and certain types of acne.

What is facial reconstruction?

Surgery to repair or reconstruct facial features in victims of cancer, facial trauma and birth defects.

What are dermal filler (or hyaluronic acid filler) injections?

Most commonly used Restylane, Radiesse, Harvested Fat and Silicone. These various substances are injected to plump up facial areas or fill in wrinkles or areas of the face.

What is a forehead lift?

Surgery to minimize forehead lines and wrinkles, and to elevate brows to reduce lid drooping.

What is laser resurfacing / laserbrasion surgery?

Light beams vaporize top layers of the skin to lessen the appearance of wrinkles, scars, birthmarks or to generally resurface facial skin.

What is liposuction?

Surgery to reduce excess fatty deposits.

What is an otoplasty?

Surgery of the ear where protruding or deformed ears can be “pinned back” by reshaping the cartilage. Sometimes referred to as “ear pinning”.

What is rhinoplasty?

Aesthetic, cosmetic or reconstructive surgery of the nose where cartilage and bone are reshaped and reconstructed; excess bone or cartilage may be removed. Rhinoplasty is sometimes referred to as “nose job”.

What is skin resurfacing?

Removal of the outer layer of the skin using abrasion, chemicals or a laser, resulting in smoother and less wrinkled skin.
