What is the difference between Facial Plastic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and other “cosmetic surgeons”?
Many people think that a plastic surgeon and a facial plastic surgeon are one and the same. However, plastic surgery and facial plastic surgery are two separate and distinct specialties. While surgeons in both fields are qualified to perform face and neck operations, facial plastic surgeons are trained to operate exclusively on the face and neck. In contrast, general plastic surgeons focus on the breast, abdomen and extremities, with less time spent training in face and neck procedures.
Facial Plastic Surgery and Board Certification
When thinking about the difference between plastic surgery and facial plastic surgery, a surgeon’s board certification is important to keep in mind. Any physician can call themselves a “facial plastic surgeon.” However, there are only three certifying boards for physician’s practicing comprehensive facial plastic surgery: The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, The American Board of Plastic Surgery and The American Board of Otolaryngology (ABOto).
Dr. Harmych is a double board-certified and fellowship trained facial plastic surgeon in Cleveland, Ohio who specializes only in face, head and neck procedures.
