Deep Plane Facelift in Cleveland, Ohio
Deep Plane Facelift is one of the most common facelift procedures performed by Dr. Harmych in Cleveland, Ohio. Deep plane facelift tightens and repositions the SMAS tissue (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) or deep tissues (muscle and facia) and skin of the face and neck. While traditional facelift improves neck definition, jawline contour and nasolabial folds, deep plane facelift involves more extensive repositioning of the midface tissues, allowing for more much better rejuvenation of the midface, cheeks and nasolabial folds.
Deep plane facelift is often the most effective procedure for older patients with more advanced aging. Dr. Harmych uses deep plane facelift technique for most of his facelift procedures, which allows for natural looking, significant and permanent results.
Dr. Harmych uses deep plane facelift technique for all facelift procedures, allowing for improvement beyond the results expected with traditional facelift.

What are the Different Types of Facelift?
The common types of facelift are:
- SMAS Facelift (includes lateral SMAS facelift and high lateral SMAS facelift)
- Deep Plane Facelift
- Revision Facelift
- Mini Facelift
- Nonsurgical Facelift
All facelift procedures address sagging neck skin, jowls and jawline, cheeks and nasolabial folds). Successful facelift procedures that provide permanent results address the deeper tissues in the face and neck (those comprised of the SMAS muscle and fascia) and are not simple “skin-only” operations.
What is the difference between Deep Plane Facelift and SMAS facelift?
The main difference between deep plane facelift and SMAS facelift is the location of the SMAS dissection. The deep plane is the potential space that exists between this SMAS layer and the layer of the face containing the muscles of facial expression. Deep plane facelift procedures involve dissection in this plane, or space.
All effective facelift procedures address the SMAS tissues to some degree. Although, traditional SMAS facelift address the SMAS tissues more laterally (or closer to the ear) and more superficially (closer to the skin surface). In contrast, deep plane facelift allows for treatment of the deeper tissues more medially, near the area of greatest concern, and allows for additional improvement in the cheeks, neck, and midface. Additionally, deep plane facelift frees and mobilizes the SMAS from four separate retaining ligaments.
- Deep plane facelift involves release of retaining ligaments that limit the results achieved by many facelift procedures
- Lesser degree of skin elevation with deep plane facelift leads to a decreased risk of wound healing problems and scarring
- Less tension on the incisions due to complete mobility and elevation of the SMAS and midface tissues
- Improved appearance of the deep plane facelift incisions
- Deep plane facelift restores cheek volume
- Deep plane facelift conserves fat and SMAS tissue, restoring facial volume
- Less recovery time with deep plane facelift
Who is a Candidate for Deep Plane Facelift in Cleveland Ohio?
The best candidates for deep plane facelift are healthy non-smokers with realistic expectations who have moderate to severe age-related cheek, face and neck sagging. Patients in their 40’s and early 50’s with mild facial aging are often candidates for more minor facelift procedures, such as a SMAS facelift or mini facelift.
Dr. Harmych’s deep plane facelift patients enjoy a natural, healthy, and rejuvenated result.
Deep plane facelift does not stop the aging process; it simply turns back the clock a few years. While the aging process naturally continues the face will always appear younger and more youthful.
How is Deep Plane Facelift Surgery Performed?
Deep plane facelift is performed with general anesthesia. Incisions are hidden within the hairline and behind the ear. A small amount of skin is elevated from the underlying tissues around the ears. The SMAS layer is entered at a point between the lateral canthus (point where the upper and lower eyelid meet) and the angle of the mandible (jaw). The deep plane tissues, located just deep (or beneath) the SMAS fascia are carefully dissected toward the nasolabial fold, corner of the mouth, and jowl area.
By separating the 4 key facial retaining ligaments, the tissues of the deep plane are carefully separated and freed from the layer containing the muscles of facial expression. The freely mobile SMAS tissues and overlying (attached) skin are carefully repositioned to a more youthful, rejuvenated position. The skin is closed in a tension-free fashion which allows for optimum healing. A soft cotton head wrap dressing is placed.
To achieve the best results, facelift may be performed in conjunction with other neck and jawline rejuvenation procedures such as chin augmentation, chin implant and jaw augmentation, neck liposuction and neck lift.
What is the cost of deep plane facelift in Cleveland Ohio?
The average cost of deep plane facelift is $16,225 with a range of $5,000 to $28,000, according to updated data (2022) from RealSelf. Dr. Harmych’s deep plane facelift patient can expect the cost to be within this range. The complexity of the case, length of case, additional facial plastic procedures, and type of anesthesia will effect the cost.
Important points about recovery
- The deep plane facelift procedure is performed in the outpatient setting.

- Mild discomfort, numbness, tightness and bruising may last several weeks.
- Patients return to most activities in about 10 days.
- Most facelift and neck lift patients resume full physical activity in 3-4 weeks.

“I have never met a doctor like Dr. Harmych. I went in for a consultation and some ideas about what I wanted done. After patiently listening he went into a thorough and thoughtful explanation about what he thought would work and have the best result. It was as if he had all the time in the world to answer my questions (there were a lot!), A few months later I had him perform the procedure. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am with the results. Dr Harmych is conscientious and therefore I had several post op appointments, it was clear that he truly cared and wanted to make sure I was satisfied. I would be remiss not to mention his very friendly office staff, BJ is the best. I highly recommend Dr. Harmych, without any reservations.”
