What is the difference between Facial Plastic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and other “cosmetic surgeons”?
Many people think that a plastic surgeon and a facial plastic surgeon are one and the same. However, plastic surgery and facial plastic surgery are two separate and distinct specialties. While surgeons in both fields are qualified to perform face and neck operations, facial plastic surgeons are trained to operate exclusively on the face and neck. In contrast, general plastic surgeons focus on the breast, abdomen and extremities, with less time spent training in face and neck procedures.
When thinking about the difference between plastic surgery and facial plastic surgery, a surgeon’s board certification is important to keep in mind. Any physician can call themselves a “facial plastic surgeon.” However, there are only three certifying boards for physician’s practicing comprehensive facial plastic surgery: The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, The American Board of Plastic Surgery and The American Board of Otolaryngology (ABOto).
Dr. Harmych is certified in Facial Plastic Surgery by both the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and The American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.
According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS):
“A large percentage of all facial plastic and reconstructive surgery is performed by board-certified otolaryngologists, whose rigorous training in the complicated head and neck area includes extensive experience with facial plastic surgery techniques.”
Dr. Harmych has this extensive experience, rigorous training and board certification.
Furthermore, Dr. Harmych spent additional time training in an American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) fellowship in Cincinnati at the Mangat-Kuy-Holzapfel Plastic Surgery Center under Devinder Mangat M.D., F.A.C.S., a pioneer in the field of facial plastic surgery. This gave him additional time to hone his skills in facial plastic surgery.
Unlike most plastic surgery, facial plastic surgery is more difficult to conceal from the public, so it is important to see a surgeon with appropriate training, credentials and experience. Dr. Harmych has the most comprehensive training and board-certifications in facial plastic surgery available. Click here to learn more about Dr. Harmych.
